Flatbed Looks Strong For '12, Van Rate Gains Moderate

The year got off to a very good start for some of the nation’s largest carriers, based on the first-quarter earnings reports of the publicly traded trucking companies. But a lukewarm economy wasn’t enough to drive a few companies out of the red. In short, those truckers who’ve developed a successful recovery strategy have picked up momentum, while other truckers are still on an uphill pull.

Butt out: How to quit smoking

Bobby Andersen, a driver for Miller Truck Lines, has been smoke-free for two years. He considered various stop smoking programs but decided to go cold turkey. “I made myself sick by smoking one cigarette after another until I was about to lose my lunch. That was it. No cravings and no problems since then,” Andersen says. Quitting cold turkey is one of many ways to kick the habit. Choose one that that works for you or, like Daniel George, a driver for U.S. Xpress says, “I practiced over and over until I got it right.”

Drivers weigh in on roadside favorites, issues in survey

In the eighth annual King of the Road Survey, Atlas Van Lines drivers indicated Petro was their favorite truck stop in the moving company’s annual survey. Thirty-nine percent of the 167 respondents selected Petro as their favorite truckstop, while 36 percent chose Flying J and 32 percent said Pilot. Thirty-seven percent of drivers indicated their favorite fast food chain was Subway, 32 percent said Wendy’s and 20 percent picked Taco Bell.

CVSA`s Roadcheck 2012

Mark your June calendars, the CVSA Roadcheck 2012 is less than a month away. The annual inspection event – the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s 72-hour safety blitz – is scheduled for June 5-7. CVSA sponsors Roadcheck with participation by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada, and the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (Mexico).
